Cool Hand Luther

Luther, “Lu” for short, entered my life 8 years ago--November 7, 1999 to be exact. I was finally at a point in my life and career when I knew I could make this commitment and I began the search the summer of 1999. I had looked at a few horses, vetted a few horses and was pretty much at the point of giving up until the next spring when Lu entered my life. Lu was a little out of shape, didn’t really want to work “too hard”, was a little green but there was just something about him. I can't really tell you why I wanted him so much – in fact, I fell off him during the trial—but there was just something about how he looked at me when I bridled him for the first time. His eye held a deep sense of kindness, intelligence and softness. I simply had to know more.

Well, I would love to say that we hit it off and life for us as partners was beautiful from the get go, but reality is that we did struggle to get to know each other. Aren’t many relationships like that? Let’s just say, in the beginning, he tolerated me misunderstanding him. But like all relationships worth having, we worked it out – ok, I started to listen better. And today, I cannot imagine my life without him.

Lu was 10 when I bought him. He is an appendix with champion quarter horse bloodlines. Lady Bug’s Moon is his Great Grandmother and for those of you who know quarter horse racing—she is in the Quarter Horse Hall of Fame along with many of Lu’s other relatives. While Lu won’t join then in the Quarter Horse Hall of Fame—he certainly holds the top spot in my hall of fame. He is a kind, sensible, reliable all around versatile horse. He is great with beginners as well as seasoned riders and he is a brilliant trail horse and, pleasure horse who had quite a nice jumping career. In 2004, Lu was NEHJC Low Hunter Champion and he was 4th for year end Low Hunter Champion for TCRA.

Today “The Lu” is a vibrant, happy, healthy horse, who continues to make me want to be a better rider and, more importantly, a better person. He is a wonderful, trusted partner and friend. He is a light in my heart and I am grateful every day I spend with him.
