Chunky Monkey aka "AJ"

According to an animal communicator, AJ thinks he’s a 9 year old. Truth has him somewhere in his 20’s. Appaloosa gelding. Owner Barb Jensen.

I knew AJ for a number of years as a camp horse that we would have from late August through mid-June. AJ had a spectacular jump, and was wicked comfortable. He did very well in the special hunter and pleasure horse divisions. He also had a devilish side. If you weren’t riding forward to a jump, his head would get as low as possible to ground on landing. He also enjoyed torturing beginners by just not moving.

One day a few summers ago, the camp called to say he wasn’t doing well, and the prognosis looked poor. After my vet spoke with theirs, it was decided he would become mine 100% and I would take care of him from then on. AJ gave us numerous scares with severe gas colics. On more than one occasion, the vet was there late at night with us prepared to put him down. Invariably, AJ would reach for a piece of grass and say “I’m not going anywhere yet”.

My commitment to AJ remains strong as ever. He now worries much less when he gets his bouts of gas colic (cause still unknown). However to add insult to injury, the poor guy went blind a few years ago. In my opinion, none of these are reasons to put a horse down.

AJ brings much joy to the barn. He is opposite the tack room so that everyone can pay attention to him. He is quick to let you know when it is horse cookie time. In addition to being the perfect horse for beginning riders to groom, he is the ideal horse for any lead line situation. He gets turned out with his pal Scooby who looks out for him and negotiates surprisingly well. We all adore him.
